data for this robot. |
| Setup: |
-
Eight kids (the MOVERS) each have a "forward"
and "reverse" button. Eight more (the SHAKERS) each have
a "left" and "right" button.
-
By taking a continuous poll of all 16 inputs, the robot decides
what to do.
-
The kids in the peanut gallery get to watch
the Robot's-eye view on the monitor, and laugh, yell, and have fun
until it's their turn to drive.
|
| Activities: |
-
Demolition Run: As quickly as possible, knock down
the Tower, and push the Big Ball and the Little Ball off of their stands.
-
Obstacle Course: Do one complete lap around the arena
without knocking down anything.
-
Robot Soccer: Push the Little Ball out of the arena.
-
Advanced Demolition Run: Same as Demolition Run, except
the other team gets to set up the arena any way they want.
-
Remote Rescue: (This one was demonstrated by the Robot
Guy and the Assistants) Use the Robot's claw to pick up a block and drop
it outside the arena.

Collected wisdom
and notes for future
improvement: |
-
Keep the activities simple. Sixteen kids driving one robot
are not sixteen times as efficient as one kid driving a robot.
-
Have a spare robot handy.
-
Rechargeable batteries are great for normal robot use, but
use alkalines for special events like this. They last longer, and you can
replace them easily.
-
If there is any way to make it operate without a tether,
it's a really good idea.
-
Teachers have the hardest jobs in the world.
